These mosaic magpies are the result of a friendship I’ve made with a lady on Instagram who is as nutty about vintage ceramics as I am! This lovely new ‘social media’ friend saw my work, in particular my mosaic owls, and immediately got in touch asking me if I could make her some magpies. After a telephone conversation to discuss the project, it transpired that her love of magpies was something her mum had instilled in her, as well as being a emblem that links through many generations in her family.

The process of working to commission begins with research, gathering images, building an inspirational mood board and making drawings. As the project started to take shape, my affection for these striking birds grew and I started noticing magpies everywhere!! I even noticed a pair living in the field in front of my house and now whenever I see them I feel a sense of reassurance that all is good with the world. Magpies mate for life and mating partners are usually together for their entire lives – how cool is that!!!

I imagine everyone is familiar with the old magpie nursery rhyme ‘one for sorrow, two for joy, three for a girl and four for a boy’ which is very apt in relation to this special collaboration – my client is due to marry on Saturday and one pair of magpies will be gifted to her mother on the day, as well as a pair for herself as a lucky charm for a long and joyful marriage.

I would like to thank my client for commissioning me and for being so amazing at sourcing some wonderful materials to use in the making of these interesting birds with their iridescent blue tales and black and white feathers. Wishing you a long and happy marriage, just like the loyal pairing of two magpies ;)))
