Now that the summer holidays are over and Autumn is almost upon us, I must get down to making the commissions from South East Open Studios. The first to be finished was this Bumble Bee stake for the garden, delivered to it’s new home at the end of August and being thoroughly enjoyed by the new owner for her birthday.

Next up, I have three commissions for Owls, all of which are double sided and made with a galvanised steel armature and decorated in vintage crockery, using mid century designs like the Hornsea ‘Heirloom’ pattern on this owl.

Luckily, in amongst my large collection of mid century modern retro ceramics, I have found some interesting shapes and patterns which make up the feather like design on the body of the Owl. The face and beak of the Owl is proving to be the most fun part – as the work evolves the character of the bird of prey comes through with the placement of different pieces of porcelain, that combine to make it’s personality!
